If you choose your carpet cleaners based on price alone and go for the lowest you will receive the lowest service and the lowest level of cleaning. There is a world of difference between good and bad carpet cleaning services. The two most common carpet cleaning scams doing the rounds are called "Bait & Switch" and "Splash & Dash" and this is how they work.

The Bait & Switch
You get a leaflet through the letterbox offering carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning at ridiculously low prices. For example "Hall, Stairs & Landing Only £15!" or "3 Piece Suite Clean Only £25!". This is the BAIT, and because of the great price you book them. When they arrive they do not inspect the carpets to assess the likelihood of shrinkage, risk of colour loss, or level of staining, and they start to look at how they can make extra money out of you.
Then the SWITCH begins. They have to move furniture (extra charge), spot clean (extra charge), the hall carpet is dirtier than they expected (extra charge), the furniture has lots of cushions (big extra charge) and so it goes on. When the job is finished (usually badly) you are presented with your invoice with all the extra unforeseen charges, your £58.00 job is now £200-£400 or whatever they can get away with. Most people pay up just to get rid of them. Your carpets are poorly cleaned and your furniture is probably ruined, which is your problem as far as they are concerned because you will not see or hear from them again.
The Carpet Cleaning Con Number 2 -
The Splash & Dash
As the name suggests they move quickly, cheaply and splash water all over the place. It works likes this. Once again you respond to a flyer and you book them for a carpet cleaning job because they are so cheap. They rush in, soaking the carpets with water...SPLASH!!! They then extract it out using inadequate machinery as quickly as possible to get the money from you and DASH off to the next job. You get left with soaking wet carpets that have not been cleaned properly and will take between 24 and 36 hours to dry depending on the equipment they used. Your carpets may shrink due to over wetting, but they will definitely re-soil very quickly. Your furniture is probably water damaged, may be beyond restoration, and you will not get them back because there is no money in it for them to return.
REMEMBER...Pay peanuts and you will get carpet cleaning monkeys!
